Aim: To provide knowledge of the corrosion and degradation of metals and other materials. To train the students in the analysis of mechanical and chemical effects on construction materials in a variety of service conditions. To teach the students how to optimize the choice of construction materials with regard to degradation and economy using handbooks and knowledge centers.
|
Contents: Properties of stainless steel and other selected metals. Description of corrosion phenomena, electrochemistry, Pourbaix diagrams, and polarisation curves.Electrochemical methods for the measurement and control of corrosion. Inspection and maintenance. Description of commonly occurring degradation phenomena as regard plastics. Systematic methods and practical examples of choice of materials e.g. within steel, plastics and coated surfaces. The choice of materials for pipe systems for cooling water, tanks and other constructions for aggressive media in the chemical industry.
