Department: Department of Planning
Aim: To give the student insight into the planning at the regional, national and international (EEC) level with special relation to the urban regions and the urban environment, and insight into the social processes shaping the development and transition of urban regions. The connections between economic and commercial development, location, transport systems, urban form and structure, and the impacts on the environment are emphasized. This insight shall make the student able to discuss development in different sectors and relate this development to land-use, urbanform and structure, and spational planning in a specific urban region, and also in a qualified way to discuss specific planning problems at the regional level.
Contents: The course presents some actual planning problems in a specific urban region - the Greater Copenhagen Area - related to the economic and commercial development, the location of firms, the transport systems, and the urban environment. It also presents specific examples of the transition and planning of other European postindustrial cities, the historical development of the urban form and structure and discusses the "good city" at the regional level - the physically functional and sustainable urban region. Futher it discusses the competition at the European level between urban regions, conflicts between national, regional and local interests, and planning as an instrument to weigh those different interests, implementation of plans, and urban planning as an academic discipline for engineers. It emphasizes recent examples from praxis involving national planning in other European cities. In addition, the students take active part in the course through student-lectures, work-shops, discussions in groups and problems-related project-work.
