Aim: The course introduces the student to the quantum-mechanical description of atoms and molecules. It enables him to understand the nature of the chemical bond and the quantization of the molecular degrees of freedom, and to interpret atomic and molecular spectra.
|
Contents: Wavefunctions and their properties, tunnelling, the harmonic oscillator, the hydrogen atom. Angular momentum, spin, many-electron atoms. Diatomic molecules, the chemical bond, small polyatomic molecules. Photoelectron spectra, vibrational and rotational spectra of diatomic molecules.
