Aim: To familiarize the students with: 1.Ceramic process technology. 2.The practical use of 3-component phase diagrams for the solution of ceramic problems.
Contents: Production of classical ceramics - treatment of clay based bodies and slips, shaping by uniaxial pressing and slip casting, drying, decoration and glazing as well as firing. Sol-gel processing of solid electrolyte. Introduction to 3-component phase diagrams and their use i the solution of problems like: Choice of chemical composition, raw materials and reaction sequence; equilibrium contra non equilibrium melts and sintering. These problems will be illustrated by calculation exercises and experimental investigation in which optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, rheology, BET, grain size analysis and thermal analysis are used to characterize the samples.
