Aim: To give a physical chemical understanding of the structure and function of biological systems.
|
Contents: Exerpts from the following subjects:
a) Membrane transport. Thermodynamics, structure and dynamics of cell membranes. The electric double layer in biology. The electrochemical background for the creation and propagation of nerve impulses.
b) Complexity in nature. The energetics of biological reaction systems. Dissipative structures and their role in biological systems. Oscillations in biological systems.
c) The structure of biopolymers. The folding and denaturation of proteins. Hydrogen bonding and the importance of hydrophobic interactions.
d) Biophysical chemical techniques: Spectroscopy, calorimetry, and scattering techniques.
The theoretical part includes laboratory exercises and simulation exercises on PCs.
