Department: Department of Control and Engineering Design
Aim: To give a fundamental understanding of the functionality, the principles of operation and the manufacture of mechanical systems. To enable the students to model and describe technical products and systems. To develop the ability to observe and reason about mechanical systems. Realising important factors in the design of products and technical systems.
Contents: In groups of four people the students will analyse specific mechanical products and try to describe a number of different aspects related to the product, i.e. industrial aspects, economical aspects, quality aspects, and product development aspects. The products are described in a number of different models including the working principles of the machine elements in the products. Based on these descriptions a "what if...." analysis is carried out where the consequences of changes in the design are considered.

The obtained results are given in as a number of reports from each group. Emphasis is put on the ability to communicate the obtained results.
