Department: Department of Control and Engineering Design
Aim: To understand the purpose, goals, content, organization, and methods of product development in a manufacturing company. To know the most important factors that influence the goals: Costs,quality, and lead-time. To be able to use selected methods considering their implementation, training, and use.
Contents: The course treats the following dimensions of product development: - Strategy, business, product planning, staging, structuring the project, and planning. - Activity patterns of product development, its content, and structuring (concurrency, integration, dispositions..). - Organization, teamwork, projects, the product development function and its tasks. - Innovation of the product development organization, the learning organization, performance. - Types of product development, technology management, technology search. - Product development methods for goal formulation,synthesis,reuse, evaluation, documentation,verification,optimization, market analysis, competitor analysis. - Product life oriented development, DFX,product development coordination. - Multiproduct development, variants, familiarity, modularisation. - Multidisciplinary product development, mechatronics. - The human operator, innovation, creativity, attitudes, knowledge, skills.
Small projects, which will be carried out in groups of two student will provide training in specific methods learnt on the course. A project from selected product development topics may be arranged. See the course 72401 Engineering Design Project.
