Department: Informatics and Mathematical Modelling

Aim: To give the participants an introduction to statistical concepts and methods so that they are able to: Set up and verify a statistical model for the outcome of (simple) experiments, to estimate unknown parameters in such models (theory of estimation) and to examine whether a given set of data deviates (essentially) from models with parameter values specified in advance (theory of testing). This implies that the participants will learn to analyse contingency tables, to compare the influence of different experimental circumstances on measurements (analysis of variance) and to assess simple, linear relationships (regression analysis).
|
Contents: Methods for overwieving and analysing a dataset: Empirical distributions, histograms and quantile diagrams. Formulation of a model. Theory of estimation: Properties of estimators, maximum likelihood, least squares and method of moments. Test theory: Generel and in one and two sample situations, and in contingency tables, for example: Non-parametric methods. Model control: Test for randomness, control of distribution law. Analysis of variance: One way and two way analysis of variance, latin squares etc. Regression analysis.
