Aim: To enable the student to develop computer programs for solving linear partial differential equations from engineering science by the finite element method.
Contents: Short treatment of the mathematical aspects of the finite element method including: local and global interpolation functions based on simple triangular elements, boundary value problems for partial differential equations, the assembly of the global algebraic system of equations, Gaussian elimination for banded systems, time-dependent problems. Systematic development, through exercises, of computer software for implementing the finite element method. The course concludes with an application of the program to a practical problem from engineering science.
