Department: Department of Environmental Science and Engineering
Aim: To be able to explain and perform calculations of the processes (physical, chemical, and biological) that influence the behavior of pollutants in streams, lakes, and in the sea.
Contents: Discussion of the behavior of three different groups of pollutants (organic matter, nutrients, and xenobiotic compounds) in surface waters (streams, lakes, and the sea). The focus will mainly be on the interaction between hydrology and chemical and biological processes, in order to be able to understand and predict the negative effects caused by pollutants in these environments. For instance: oxygen depletion, eutrophication and algal growth, acidification, pollution related to discharge of oil, heavy metals and micro organisms. Aims for water quality planning and aquatic management are also included in the course.
