Aim: The course provides the students with detailed understanding of the processes governing the transport and attenuation of pollutants in soils and aquifers.
Contents: Pollution sources, Overview of relevant pollutants and hydrogeology, Site investigations and risk assessment, Transport of NAPLs, Dissolution and leaching, Sorption of organic pollutants, Microbiology and degradation, Modelling of degradation, Vapour transport of organic pollutants in unsaturated soil, Soil chemistry of cyanides, Soil chemistry of heavy metals, Redox zones and organic compounds (redox buffering, landfill plumes, plumes from oilspills, creosote). The different processes will especially focus on the following group of pollutants: Aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated aliphatics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, pesticides and nitrate.
