Department: Institut for Procesteknik
Aim: To learn the student to choose among the various techniques for microstructure (_morphology, phase distribution and chemical composition) characterisation of metallic materials.
Contents: Physical principles of the interactions between solid state and waves, electrons and ions at a level that is sufficient to understand the principle of the characterisation techniques. Going through (im)possibilities of the most import mathods for microstructure characterisation: ligth microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray and electron diffraction, energy and wavelength dispersive spectrometry, Auger and photo-electron spectroscopy, scanning probe techiques. Case studies.
