Department: Department of Hydrodynamics and Water Resources
Aim: To enable the students to: a) understand the elements of the hydrological cycle) b) give a deterministic mathematical description of hydrological processes: precipitation, evaporation, percolation, groundwater flow and surface water flow c) analyze measurements of these hydrological processes d) use appropriate methods to solve problems in connection with the management of water resources.
Contents: The hydrological cycle, water balance, water resources. Atmospheric processes, radiation, energy balance, temperature distribution, wind, evaporation, snow hydrology. Infiltration and percolation. Flow of ground water in the saturated and the unsaturated zone, stratified ground water, stationary and non-stationary well problems, solute transport. Run-off, unit hydrograph methods. Hydrological measurements. Extreme values and risk. Hydrological systems and models.
