Department: Department of Hydrodynamics and Water Resources
Aim: To learn to assess and determine design forces for hydraulic structures.
To choose and design structures regarding forces, geotechnical and other local conditions.
To show examples of solutions to complicated engineering problems, and how to choose the best alternative.
Contents: Design forces due to waves, current, water level, ice, wind and impact from ships.
Wave spectra and response analysis. Wave agiation, mooring- and fender systems in harbours, at open terminals and for offshore loading systems.
Capital and maintenance dredging in navigation channels and harbours, including environmental aspects.
Design and choice of a structure in cases of: rubble mound breakwaters, vertical (caisson) breakwaters coastal protection structures and dikes.
Scour protection in harbours and at spillways. Quay and pier structures. River regulation. Offshore and harbour structures in the arctic. Hydraulic problems related to sunken tunnels and buoyant tunnels. Foundations for offshore windmills. Design of marine pipelines. Physical model tests and scale effects. Status on numerical modelling.
Examples of specific problems in hydraulic engineering and the engineering approach to these.
