Department: Department of Hydrodynamics and Water Resources
Aim: To give the participants (1) knowledge and practical tools for integrated management of water resources; (2) a basic understanding of global, regional and national water resource problems along with strategies, opportunities and constraints for substainable water resources development and management; and (3) cases of application.
Contents: Facts about water resources and quality at the global scale, water resources monitoring and estimation, water demand forecasting, MIKE Basin modelling (water resources planning and water allocation), watershed management, dam management, drougt and flood management, cost benefit analysis, environmental impact assessment (EIA) of water development projects, short on geographical information systems and climate change. International principles and trends for integrated water resources management (IWRM) including management of international (trans-boundary) waters, linkage to land use and physical planning, public policy development, institutional aspects, legislation of water, water as an economic good, water pricing, demand versus supply management, private sector involvement, decentralized water management, social aspects of water management, capacity building and participatory approach in IWRM, and the role of engineers and donors in IWRM. Case studies of the implementation of IWRM (opportunities and constraints) from around the world (different societies, different scales).
