Aim: To develop a capacity to use social science theories about development and transfer of technology to developing countries. To provide the students with social sciences methodologies to conduct field studies on their own, such as interviewing, observation, survey and documentation. To provide the students with tools for planning, monitoring and evaluation of development aid projects: this will also enable a design of their own subsequent project work, including field stay, in correspondance with current formats of development aid agencies.

Contents: The course explores the relationship between technology and society in developing countries on the basis of concrete development programs and projects addressing environmental problems related to industrial and urban development. The main elements are theories and methodologies on technology transfer and technology assessment in developing coubtries, on planning, monitoring and evaluation of developing aid projects (LFA, RRA, project cycle etc.), and field work methods. A major part of the course is conducted as group work analysing selected project cases.
