Aim: To enable the participants to analyze and design multivariable controllers for chemical plants on the basis of an understanding of the process dynamics and a given process model.
Contents: The course starts with a review of mathematical representations of dynamic models of multivariable system in the time- and frequency domains for continous as well as discrete systems (vecotrdifferential equations, transferfunction matrices, state space formulation and converting between domains). Next the system response, controllability, observability and interactions are considered. These are the backgrounds for design of multivariable control systems using pole placement, root loci, optimal control, robust control and model predictive control. Simultaneously the design of estimators used, when direct measurement is infeasible, is covered.
