Aim: To enable the students to understand the mechanisms for solute transport in different membrane types and to estimate the possibilities to use separation processes based on the application of semipermeable membranes.
Contents: The course is divided into five main parts:
1) Membrane materials and properties. Preparation of synthetic membranes based on polymers, ceramics and metallic materials.
2) Characterization of porous and non-porous membrane materials. Mechanisms for sorption and transport of gases, organic solutes and salts in different membrane types. Polyrization phenomena and fouling of membrane surfaces.
3) Membrane processes: Gaspermeation, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, microfiltration and diafiltration. Dialysis, electrodialysis and bipolar membranes. Pervaporation, membrane distillation and membrane contactors. Liquid membranes and facilitated transport membranes.
4) Membrane modules, plant layout and process design of membrane plants. Technical-economical evaluation of different membrane processes compared to traditional separation processes.
5) Different applications of membrane separation processes in the pharmaceutical and biotechnical industry, the food technology, the petrochemical industry and in general in waste water treatment.
