Aim: Many structures take the form of beams, frames or trusses, and an important aspect of their design is the determination of section forces and stresses in the individual sections.
The course gives the theoretical background for calculation of section forces and deformations of statically determinate and statically indeterminate structures. At course completion the participant a) can determine section forces and deformations in plane structures with a few degrees of static indeterminacy, b) can understand and check computer calculation of highly indeterminate structures, c) has elementary knowledge of stresses, strains and material behaviour, d) can determine properties of simple beam cross sections, e) can calculate stresses in beams as needed for design.
|
Contents: Calculation of reactions and section forces in statically determinate trusses and frames by use of equilibrium equations. Methods for control of results (equilibrium of parts, estimates). Determination of displacements by the principle of virtual work. Introduction to the concepts of stress and strain and linear elastic material behaviour. Calculation of beam cross-section properties, and the associated stress distribution. Determination of section forces and deformation of statically indeterminate trusses and frames by the force method. Brief introduction to non-elastic material behaviour. Illustration of theory by examples from steel-, timber- and concrete structures.
