Department: Research Center COM
Aim: To enable the students a) to analyse and design ultra-fast integrated circuits, that can work at data speeds higher than 1Gbit/s for use in broadband communications (broadband electronics), especially optical communication and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) systems; b) to understand the design principles involved spanning from transistor level over standard cells to high-level design; c) to take part in research work on design and application of monolithic integrated circuits for optical communication and ATM systems.
Contents: Survey of high-speed electronics in optical communication and ATM systems. GaAs integrated circuits, including MESFET, HEMT, HBT, SPICE models, noise margin, logic gates, logic families, circuit examples and interconnections. GaInAsP opto-electronic integrated circuits. High-speed Si CMOS integrated circuites, including photo-receiver. Si ECL integrated circuits for optical communication. Si ECL and CMOS standard cells. High-speed design by use of VHDL (Very High-speed integrated circuits hardware Description Language) taking ATM systems as examples.
