Aim: The objective for this course is to provide the students a network perspective overview of functions and elements as well as related standards, that will be used for the implementation of the future integrated broadband communication network. The course will take its starting point in the ongoing integration of tele- and data-communication.
Contents: The focus of the course will be on service integrated and switched networks and contain topics such as network topology (ring, star, meshed, tree) trunk network and access network (PON, wireless) horizontal and vertical reference models, system, transmission and multiplexing protocols (SDH, ATM, ADSL, VDSL, SCM) and the internal relation, logical vs. physical networks, error protection (objective, methods, layering) call and resource control, "network management" (TMN), multilevel switching, distributed vs. centralised switching, implementation of large switch systems. At an appropriate level the course will incorporate topics from ongoing research activities within the department as well as guest lecturers from Danish industry.
