Department: Department of Electromagnetic Systems
Aim: To give the students an advanced introduction to electromagnetic field theory that will enable the student to keep up will specialized literature and to solve complex problems. Principles and techniques are treated within radiation, propagation, and reception of time harmonic and transient fields.
Contents: The course deals with field principles and exact, numerical and asymptotic methods of analysis. Examples within field principles are: Equivalent sources, induced sources, duality, FermatÆs principle, Huygens´s principle, equivalence principles, reciprocity, BabinetÆs principle, dyadic Green's functions, spectral theory and expansion in planar, cylindrical, and spherical waves. Examples within analytical methods are: Geometrical optics and geometrical theory of diffraction, physical optics and physical theory of diffraction, the T-matrix method, inverse scattering, integral equations and the method of moments. The principles and methods are used for the solution of problems related to satellite antennas, radar, imaging, etc. Furthermore the treatment of noise in optical amplifiers on photon- and field basis may be dealt with. Programming and calculations on computers will be part of exercises and projects.
