Aim: The students should acquire a basic understanding of biological processes - from cell to industry. Consequently, the students will acquire knowledge about the cell structure, the biochemical and molecular biology processes together with structure and control of biotechnological processes. With this backgroud the student should be able to discuss problems like eg. biodiversity, bioethanol, purification, waste disposal, bioinformatics, environment, food and medical biotechnology.
|
Contents: Based on chosen themes - bioethanol, insulin, food, antibiotics, environment - the course covers theory and practicals with the disciplines of microbiology, biotechnology and biochemistry. Additionally, the students will work in details with the earlier introduced theory in microbiology, biotechnology and biochemistry by performing a specific project on a bioprocess. The theory covers:
- the cell as a cell factory: The structure and function of macromolecules. From gene to protein. Enzymes and redox metabolism.
- Industrial bioprocesses: Biotechnological unit operations. Instrumentation. Media. Mass balances. Simple kinetics. Down-stream processing. Economy.
- Applied aspects: Bioprocesses, medical biotechnology, food, plant biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, biodiversity, bioethics.
