Aim: The aim of the course is to give the students practical knowledge of methods which can be applied to determine composition of soils, and to measure transport, sorption and degradation of chemical compounds in soil and water systems.
Contents: Characterization of soils. Measurements of pH, electric conductivity, cation exchange capacity, texture, particle size distribution, Kow, Kd, hydraulic conductivity, porosity, phoshate sorption capacity. PID and GC methods for headspace analysis in the unsaturated zone. Application of existing software in modelling transport processes in the saturated zone (MOC and MUST methods). Remedation of polluted soil. Field experiments, groundwater sampling and analyses.
