Kursusmål: The primary aim of the course is to present the most recent advances and new, experimental techniques to study microbial growth, activity and interactions in complex communities. Special emphasis will be laid upon:
1. Extraction and isolation of microorganisms from the environment.
2. Methodologies to detect physiological state, stress responses, antagonism and intercellular communication in microorganisms.
3. Recent single-cell tevhniques to localize specific microorganisms in complex environments, e.g. during root colonization and biofilm formation.
4. Detection of specific microbial activities, e.g. gene expansion, nutrient transformation, energy metabolism and gene transfer.
Kursusindhold: Bacteria, community analysis, in situ techniques, rRNA hybridization, reporter genes, biofilms, rhizosphere, cell communication, structure/function relationships, metabolism.
