Aim: The students aquire basic knowledge of the internal structure of living cells, their biological function and the biochemical and macromolecular processes on that they are based, so that they are qualified for following and participating in the current biology debate (gene technology, ethics etc.), and also that they can attempt more advanced courses within the chemistry sector.
Contents: The cell as a fundamental biological unit: structure, function, metabolism, growth, reproduction, heredity, variability. Main topics: biochemistry and molecular biology. Chemistry and synthesis of amino acids and proteins, nucleotides and nucleic acids, carbohydrates and fats. Enzymes:structure, reactions, inhibition. Dynamic biochemistry: Degradation, biosynthesis, regulation of metabolism and energy yield. Synthesis of "information" macromolecules (DNA, RNA, protein). Regulation of cell activities, including regulation of metabolism and synthesis of macromolecules, reaction to external influences, eg. inhibiting factors in the external environment (chemical, physical). Mutation and mutagenesis. Genetic processes in lower and higher organisms. Gene technology.
