Department: Department of Microbiology
Aim: To give the students practical experience with the most widely used experimental procedures in molecular genetics especielly with focus on cloning and analysis og gene expression in industrially important microorganisms such as the bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Lactococcus lactis and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Contents: The course is divided in to two parts. One is a so-called "free" exercise in molecular genetics (gene technology) which runs throught the entire course period. During this exercise the students will gain insight in to how an experimental process is planned and which types of methods, that can be used to solve the actual problem.
At the same time several obligatory exercises with detailed recipes will be performed. These exercises will demonstrate the use of the most widely used experimental procedures of gene technology and molecular biology including PCR, sequencing, hybridization and analysis of gene expression by the use of gene fusions. Lectures thet describe the research in the field of molecular genetics that is going on at the department will be given during the course.
