Aim: To teach the students the use of numerical methods, as applied to problems of a technical or physical nature, that are expressed in mathematical form. By application of a numerical method, the problem is expressed in a manner that allows the use of a computer to produce a numerical result. For a given problem, the students must be able to make an appropriate choice of numerical method, taking into consideration the amount of computational work required and the accuracy obtained. The students are taught a critical attitude towards computed results.
Contents: Introduction to MATLAB. Computational methods for the solution of the following problems: Systems of linear equations, interpolation, zeros of functions, nonlinear systems of equations, integration, ordinary differential equations. Elementary error analysis of these methods. The syllabus is presented together with examples, frequently of technical origin.
