Department: Informatics and Mathematical Modelling
Aim: The course is a collaboration between Dept. of Mathematical Modelling, Dept. of Environmental Science and Engineering, Dept. of Buildings and Energy, and Dept. of Geology and Geotechnical Engineering. The course gives an introduction to important concepts from mathematical modelling, programming, and numerical analysis. The aim of the course is to teach Matlab programming, to give the students hand-on experience with mathematical modelling of cases related to environmental studies, and to train the students in the use of numerical methods for computer simulations.
Contents: Introduction to Matlab programming. Numerical methods for integration and for solving differential equations. Mathematical models for dynamics, diffusion, and other model problems. Influence of model errors, discretization errors, and rounding errors; numerical stability. Project work with a more realistic case from environmental studies or energy technology.
