Department: Informatics and Mathematical Modelling
Aim: To describe non-linear coherent phenomena in biology. The main topics are excitable cells, non-linear dynamics of protein and DNA molecules, emergent structures, and the dynamics of the brain.
Contents: Simple nonlinear diffusion. The Hodgkin-Huxley system and the FitzHugh-Nagumo equation. Hamiltonian lattices and the DST equation. Biological solitons. Perturbation and stability analysis. Coupled nerve impulses. Emergent structures in biology. Dynamics of the brain and philosophical perspectives.
