Aim: The purpose of the course is: 1. To give the students an understanding of the processes within environmental biotechnology, including the interactions between the biological, chemical, and physical phenomena which determine the function of the biotechnological reactors. 2. Apply this understanding of the processes to manipulate and optimize the reactor function, and to plan experiments in order to characterize the processes. 3. Develop the ability of the students to work independently and in a creative way.
|
Contents: The topics covered during the course are biotechnological processes aimed at the treatment of drinking water, wastewater, waste air, solid waste/sludge, soil cleaning, etc.. The contaminants are mostly complex organic waste material, organic chemicals, and nitrogen species. The basic learning tool is the computer program AQUASIM. For each of the biotechnological processes dealt with, the students will get an AQUASIM-file with a pre-programmed problem. This forms the basis for answering a number of questions, whereby the students acquire an understanding of the processes involved. The amount of programming the students have to do is kept at a minimum in order to focus on the understanding of the problems/processes and in order to avoid loss of time because of programming difficulties.
