Aim: To provide a basic introduction to development theory and various conceptual models which are used in connection with international aid programmes. Moreover, to enable students to make use of these theories when studying the role of cultural, social and economic factors in the development process.
Contents: This couse introduces the students to typical problems in international development aid, in particular during work in developing countries. On the basis of a development aid project case, themes such as agricultural development, living conditions of the household, local communities and popular participation, the political system, industrialization strategy, and international dicision of labour, are covered. The course includes a number of guest lectures and ausio-visual presentations in order to provide a detailed understanding of the aid project case, and to communicate practical experiences from engineering work in developing countries. A major part of the course is conducted as group work, by which the students in making use of the theoretical literature provides an in-depth analysis of a selected problem related to the aid project case.
