Remarks: The course is given in co-operation between Department of Technology and Social Sciences (ITS), Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (IMT) and Department of Buildings and Energy (IBE).

Aim: The aim of the course is to qualify the students to carry out a field study (of a duration of at least 3 months) within topics related to environment and development. The course can be preproject to the thesis project or the polytechnical midway project (PMP). During the course, the students work with the technical aspects of the project and the field study and with the aspects related to the dynamics between technological change and societal change, in order to obtain the needed knowledge and qualifications.

Contents: The students read technical literature within the topic of the project. Furthermore, the students read literature on theory and methods within assessment of the societal and environmental aspects of the changes or the investigations that are studied or organised as part of the project. It could be theory and methods within transfer of technology and knowledge, technology assessment, the roles of experts, environmental assessment etc. Furthermore, the students read literature on the relevant investigation methods: laboratory methods, sampling techniques, interviews, workshops, collection of statistic data, co-operation with organisations, companies and local communities etc. As part of the course, the students plan the project and the field study using the Logical Framework Approach (LFA) in order to identify the organisational, physical and economic resources needed for the project work and the field study.
