Aim: To enable the participants
* To evaluate the possibility to prepare polymers from given low molecular building blocks (monomers)
* To estimate the influence of process conditions on reaction rate and molecular structure of polymers
* To evaluate modification possibilities and degradation.
|
Contents: In general the possibilities for taylormaking polymers with specific molecular structure are considered. Polymerization reactions are treated, including step reactions and chain reactions based on free radical, ionic and complex initiation mechanisms. Emphasis is on an understanding of reaction parameters controlling reaction rate, molecular weight distribution and molecular structure, such as branch structure, crosslinks and stereochemical configurations. Reaction mechanisms which are involved in polymerization reactions are treated thoroughly. This treatment allows an evaluation of e.g. influence of reaction medium, of added chemicals and of monomer structure on the reaction. Selected possibilities for modification of polymers in order to change their properties are treated. Finally, polymer degradation reactions and relationships between structure and stability are treated.
