Aim: To investigate the local shape of curves and surfaces by means of modern differential geometry.
Contents: Plane curves and space curves (including Bézier curves). Curvature and torsion. Surfaces in 3-space, tangent vectors, the Gauss map, Gaussian curvature, mean curvature, developable surfaces, surfaces of revolution, minimal surfaces, surfaces of constant curvature, lines of curvature, asymptotic curves, abstract surfaces, introduction to geometric tensor analysis, geodesics. Examples showing the use of computer systems such as Mathematica and Maple.
