Department: Department of Organic Chemistry
Aim: To give a theoretical and practical knowledge of the synthesis and reactions of organic chemical compounds. To train the ability to account for electronic flow and reaction mechanisms in a systematic manner. To coordinate the subjects and examples chosen as well as possible with
other chemistry related courses in the Chemistry and the Biotechnology four semester Programmes.
Contents: The bonding and stereochemistry of carbon. Preparation, reactivity and properties of simple organic compounds are treated, systematized according to functional groups (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl and aryl halides, alcohols and phenols, ethers, aromatics, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives and amines). Simple reaction mechanisms. Reactive intermediates (radicals, carbocations, carbanions). Electron structures and resonance theory. The detailed selection of reaction types and examples of compounds will aim at supporting the other chemistry related courses in the Chemistry and the Biotechnology four semester Programmes.
