Scope and form: 3 afternoons with laboratory exercises weekly for 7 weeks and 2 afternoons weekly for 5 weeks.
Examination: Evaluation of journals, reports and analyses (Pass/fail)

Remarks: The course is a mandatory requirement for all other laboratory courses in organic chemistry. With regard to later laboratory courses in organic chemistry and biochemistry, it is recommended that 23117 is taken early in the studies. It is advantageous to take it in parallel with 23220, since some of the theory covered in 23220 (spectroscopy, reaction mechanisms) is used in 23117.

Department: Department of Organic Chemistry
Aim: To practise basic laboratory techniques, aiming at synthesis of organic compounds, their purification and analysis using chromatography and spectroscopy. To illustrate and extend the theory in 23110 Organic Chemistry 1 and to some extent 23220 Organic Chemistry 2.
Contents: Simple organic chemical unit operations in the laboratory. Synthesis and analysis of organic compounds. Thin layer and gas chromatography. IR spectroscopy. Polarimetry. Safety in the laboratory, including the use of handbooks.
