23220 Organic Chemistry 2
Danish title: Organisk kemi 2
Language: Danish Credit points: 5
Type: Open University
Language: Danish

Previous course: C2320
No credit points with: C2320
Prerequisite: 23110/C2310
Recommended semester: 3rd semester
Scope and form: 2 Modules, lectures. Problem solving sessions are offered.
Examination: Written exam (13-scale)
Remarks: It is recommend that the course is taken in parallel with 23117 Elementary Laboratory Course in Organic Chemistry, since some of the theory presented in 23220 is used also in 23117. In addition, 23117 gives an illustration of the theoretical content of 23220.

Department: Department of Organic Chemistry
Aim: To extend the students' knowledge of organic chemistry and to enable them to rationalize and predict organic chemical reactions. To give the student a general understanding of many organic chemical phenomena in everyday life and in biology and technology.
Contents: A more thorough discussion of reaction types known from 23110 Organic Chemistry 1, e.g. carbonium ion rearrangements, mechanism and stereochemistry of aliphatic nucleophilic substitution and addition and elimination reactions.
The uses of Carbanions in organic synthesis are expanded. Conformational analysis is presented and integrated into reaction mechanisms and stereochemistry. Spectroscopy is introduced to determine the structures (stereochemistry included) of organic compounds: NMR and IR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and InfraRed spectroscopy). Polyfunctional molecules are frequently used as examples and chemical and structural properties of terpenes, steroids, carbohydrates, and amino acids are discussed.
