Aim: To enable the participants with a background in transmission-theory to understand the structures and functions of modern data networks, and to understand the complexity of the interworking between different components of the data networks.

Contents: Structure and topology of data networks. Flow-control and ARQ-strategies. Different types of data networks, especially local area networks (LANs) and packet-switched networks (X.25). OSI and TCP/IP protocol-architectures, including protocols and interfaces for the lower layers. New services in the Internet. Principles and algorithms for routing. Interconnection of networks with bridges and routers. Transport protocols. Management of data networks. ATM networks. Security and encryption in data networks.
