Aim: To enable the student to analyse and design combined telecommunication networks with emphasis on switching. The aim is to explain the function of switching systems (exchanges) based on computer control (program-controlled exchanges) and switching systems based on digital switching elements (integrated digital exchanges).

Contents: Elementary theory of telecommunication traffic, switching elements, network architecture, numbering, signaling systems, stored-programme-controlled and integrated digital exchanges, ATM technology and OSI model. Mobile telephony, Internet telephony, TMN. Access technologies (e.g. xDSL)
